John Burt Foster
George Mason University

John Burt Foster, Jr., holds a doctorate from Yale in comparative literature and is University Professor in the English Department at George Mason University in Virginia, where he teaches European and world fiction. After having edited The Comparatist and Recherche littéraire / Literary Research (the journal of the International Comparative Literature Association), he is now the ICLA’s American secretary. His publications include many articles on modern literature and thought, as well as books on Nietzsche and modern fiction (Heirs to Dionysus), on Nabokov’s art of memory, and on the “transnational” Tolstoy. He is also the coeditor, with his colleague Wayne Froman, of two essay collections, Thresholds of Western Culture and Dramas of Culture.
